Number 9:  Eight O’Clock Coffee with $38.5 million in sales.

Eight O’Clock coffee is actually the only one on this list that I had never heard of, but they hold just under 2% of the entire market share.  Back in 2003 the company was sold by A&P to an investment firm.  Looks like this is one investment that is paying off!

Number 3:  Starbucks with $189.2 million in sales.

Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, but they are the third largest overall coffee brand in the U.S. with a 9.75% market share.  And I bet you thought they were number 1?!

History behind that cup of Joe

Coffe started in Ethipia around the ninth century and by the 15th centuryis spread to Persia, Arabia and North America.  coffe was founded when a goat herder noticed that his goats were very lively after eating the coffe berries.

I bet you didn’t know coffee beans came from a coffe berry?  cofee beans were first roasted and brewed, similar to how it is done today, in Arabia.  One of the first descriptions of coffe was by Leonhard Rauwolf who was later to have siad;

“A beverage as black as ink, useful against numerous illnesses, particularly those of the stomach.  Its consumers take it in the morning, quite frankly, in a porcelain cup that is passed around and from which each one drinks a cupful.  It is composed of water and the fruit from a bush called Bunnu.”
